There is something very exciting about hiking in salt marshes. You have to time your journey with the tides and accept some level of (manageable) risk. Small creeks that you could easily jump over can become large channels that you have to wade through in your underwear. They’re full of unique plants and birds. The smallest difference in elevation and inundation frequency can cause an enormous difference in plant communities. I left the dyke on Schiermonnikoog when the tide was almost at its lowest, walked over “het Rif”, went for a quick swim and walked back with the incoming tide and setting sun.
