Even in February there are nice things to see for plant ecologists in Iceland, as long as you don’t mind staring at the ground with numb fingertips..

Stereocaulon, Racomitrium and Cetraria appearing from under the snow on a relatively warm day in February. The Racomitrium moss is immediately green and ready to go!
Tiny leaves of Saxifraga oppositifolia and Thymus praecox
Autumn appearance of the mountain avens (Dryas octopetala). It has several names in Icelandic, depending on its growth stage. When it grows these hairy tufts after flowering, it is called “Hárbrúða”.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus
More Racomitrium in front of Kirkjufell in Haukadalur (Iceland). This mountain and adjacent valley were believed to be haunted.
