On a snow scooter trip through Adventdalen and Helvetiadalen for the UNIS course in Climate Change Biology 2022. This part of Svalbard is full of slightly mysterious hydrological phenomena such as frost blisters and pingo’s. Drilling through the ice, the pressurized water gushes out of these ice domes or small hills. Depending on where exactly the water comes from, it can have strange rusty colours or high methane contents (which means you can bottle it and then set it on fire!).

Ice crystals on a frost blister
A cracked frost blister, with orange colour due to high iron content
Drilling into a pingo to sample the water, snugly in our scooter suits
Water gushing out after drilling, again a strange rusty colour
