Thawing of permafrost is more than just a phase transition from solid to liquid water in the ground. It is a fundamental change of the foundation that underlies ecosystems, river systems, lakes, houses, even gas pipes and other infrastructure. The ground can become soft and unstable, form ponds and pits or start to erode. I used acetone transfer prints of photos from the Siberian tundra to capture this loss of structure of the landscape.
