This summer season, I developed a strange fascination for views from cabins, or other small and isolated ‘inside areas’ within a large and wild landscape of ‘outside’. The cabin becomes a safe haven, a microverse of stories and small symbols of cosiness and connectedness.

Sleeping with a view, and 24hr daylight. Iqattoq cabin, mid West Greenland
I write in the cabin book. An important tradition. Photo by Sander Veraverbeke.
The old core strorage facility of Store Norske coal company in Endalen, Svalbard. Somewhere last year the roof collapsed. The bridge and road to the building are not much better off.
Drilled up cored, used to search for coal deposits
View from the old telegraph building in Ny-Alesund, with the Chinese research station and monitoring set-ups in the background
View from the Dutch station in Ny-Alesund, with many trinkets collected over the years
View from Nilsebu
Again, view from Nilsebu
An odd one; view through the bottom of a toilet, right on top of a bridge, as you walk from Ny-Alesund towards the area where the old campsite used to be. What a party to poop here, right off a bridge into a gully. The vegetation below the bridge is of course very lush, green and tall…
