Two seemingly similar Svalbard plants, with subtle differences.

  • Silene involucrata ssp. furcata: petals extend about half a centimeter from the calyx (the round base on the flower), and are white and notched. The flower always points more or less uwards. The calyx is clearly less broad than long.
  • Silene uralensis ssp. arctica: petals hardly extend from the calyx, and are pink and fringed. The flower points down, except when it is done flowering. The calyx is broad, and even becomes broader than tall once it is fruiting.

Both linocuts.
