Catching the beautiful aurora borealis on camera is a fun game. I usually use a tripod, very slow shutter speed and fairly high light sensitivity. If you walk around the tripod and illuminate yourself with a flashlight briefly, you can capture both yourself and the auroras, a trick I learned from my dad when he was a northern lights travel guide. Illuminating yourself with a flashlight multiple times creates a really fun haunted effect.

Using this trick with slow shutter speeds can even reveal auroras that the naked eye cannot see. This happened when I tried to capture shooting stars just outside of Reykjavík. I was very surprised to see auroras at the edge of a city in August!
